Abstract:
Cardoon (Cynara cardunculus L.) is an herbaceous species indicated as one of the most suitable energy crops for Southern European countries. Cynara cardunculus L. lignocellulosic biomass can be used for energy production and seeds to obtain oil, as raw material for biodiesel. Cynara crop production costs can be shared between lignocellulosic biomass and oil seeds. The aim of this work was to evaluate seed production of vegetal material selected of cardoon. Three cultivars were studied in rain fed conditions in Extremadura region, Southwestern Spain. Cultivar called “6” yielded higher weight of seeds per plant in the three cycles studied (2007/2008, 2008/2009 and 2009/2010). In the second crop cycle a seeds production estimate of 1100 kg ha1 was obtained with a total rainfall of 369.4 mm, while in the third crop cycle a seeds yield estimate of 1690 kg ha1 was obtained with a total rainfall of 736.2 mm. Cynara cardunculus L. is characterized by a positive energy and greenhouse gas balances.
