Abstract:
The potential energy concentrated in municipal solid waste (MSW) is estimated in Chile by following a proposed methodological approach for potential analysis. Alternatives to the utilization of landfill biomethane via direct burning (LBE), MSW incineration to generate electricity (IC), and collecting and upgrading to feed into the grid (LBI) were carried out. These alternatives are evaluated and compared using criteria such as cost of generation, environmental implications, legal conditions and shortterm challenges for the country. In the cost modeling, information about capital investment and reference technologies was taken from the available literature. This modeling allows for an estimation of the costs associated with energy generation for the options previously defined. The estimated technical potential is 1.2 and 6.8 TWhe year 1 for the two first options, whereas the technical potential of biomethane for injection is estimated in 297 MMNm3 year 1 . The representative cost of energy generation, which was estimated in 6.8 and 7.7 ct€/kWhe for biomethane burning and incineration, and 14.8 €/MMBTU for biomethane for injection, were strongly influenced by the scale of energy conversion units. Additionally, indirect effects on cost were affected by the concentration of population and the construction planning of landfills.
