Abstract:

Based on Malaysia’s position as one of the world’s top producers of oil palm as well as its rigorous agricultural activities, there is an enormous potential for the development and promotion of biomass commercialisation and utilisation. In parallel to the growing concern of climate change, sustainable development and increased fossil fuel prices, the government has introduced several initiatives such as the National Green Technology Policy and the Renewable Energy Act 2010 to kick-start the uptake of projects using renewable resources. In line with the above perspectives, Sustainable Production of the Biomass Industries in Malaysia (Biomass-SP) aims to boost biomass commercialisation projects by enhancing economic and environmental competitiveness of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Malaysia based on the principles of sustainable consumption and production (SCP) and link them with the global supply chain of biomass. In response to the growing demand for energy and eco-products from renewable resources worldwide, this paper will highlight opportunities for biomass commercialisation in Malaysia, the potential for international biomass trade and how Biomass-SP can act as a focal point for knowledge, contacts, technology and finance for stakeholders of biomass industry in Malaysia and Europe.
