A Novel Complex MSW and Biomass Processing System with the Economical and Environmental Target to Maximize Waste-To-Energy Output

Abstract:

Hungary joined the European Union in 2004. It was the turning point in the field of waste-treatment and waste-recycling due to the national legislations and R&D. One consequence of it was the implementation of separate waste collection and the mechanical-biological treatment (MBT) of the residue fraction. However, the MBT produces a high amount of bio stabilate (CLO), which is a non-marketable by-product. So the energy content of the MSW, within the traditional MBT, can be recovered insignificantly. However, the waste-to-energy concept is of high importance in Hungary. The “Development of Innovative and Sustainable Energetic Products and Technologies” R&D Project was carried out. As a result, a novel complex processing system was developed and experimentally verified at pilot level, which can be characterized by a very high waste-to-energy recovery rate, achieved through the production of high-and low quality Refuse Derived Fuel, the biogas and the pyrolysis gas and oil, as well as the energy crops. The system is very flexible, because the output of the various energy-products can be easily optimized to achieve the highest profit. The possibility of the utilization of energetic products can be realized both in centralized and decentralized energy production.
