Abstract:

Dual Fluidized Bed Steam Gasification is a promising technology for the utilization of biomass and has been demonstrated on an industrial scale since 2002. The solidsolid interactions of inorganic matter such as bed material (e.g. olivine), additives (calcium oxide and dolomite) and biomass ash with respect to catalytic properties for tar reduction have been studied. Two plants with different configurations concerning ash handling were analyzed to understand the different effects and mechanisms resulting from different process setups. Samples of used and fresh bed material were analyzed using XRF and XRD. The analyses show an increase of calcium content in the used bed material. Crystal analyses show the formation of calcium silicates. Mass balances are presented for the inorganic matters present as coarse particles (>200µm) as well as fine particles to evaluate the impact on operation of the inorganic loops. Optimization of ash handling for dual fluidized bed steam gasification plants is presented.
