Abstract:

The Province of Alberta (Canada) is uniquely positioned to combine the strengths of its large energy industry (hydrocarbons) with its wealth of agriculture and forestry resources. Alberta has invested almost $300 million CAD to support bioeconomy initiatives in the areas of feedstock improvement, biomass conversion and product development. The talk will describe several examples of Alberta investment in technology innovation and commercialization that have resulted in new bioopportunities in transport fuels, heat, electricity, chemicals, materials and food. New technologies and economies of scale are creating exciting opportunities for how the agriculture, forestry and energy sectors use its resources and integrate its efforts to produce the sustainable products and services that will be needed in this century.
