Abstract:

In the framework of the German Climate Initiative measures have been initiated in the last few years with the specific aim to develop energy and climate efficiency and expand renewable energies. For the achievement of the climate protection targets and the designing of a sustainable energy supply, biomass energy use is of core importance. Therefore the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety has drawn up a program for "Promoting projects to optimize biomass energy use" in 2009. The program supports further development of the use of power, heat and fuels from biomass, up to the preparation of a sustainable and supportable biomass strategy. Furthermore, the funding program is focusing on the development and optimization of climate-friendly and energy-efficient technologies for the utilization of biomass for energy, taking into consideration their sustainability and climate protection aspects. Some of these projects are presented in this paper.
