Abstract:
Industrial combustion tests revealed that replacing heavy fuel oil with biooils is feasible, but not straight forward and some technical challenges during biooil combustion can occur. In this study fouling, corrosion phenomena and dust emissions during the biooil combustion are investigated both on labscale and fullscale. This is done in order to deepen the understanding of ash formation and deposition under these conditions as well as providing input and validation data for sophisticated modelling of these processes. Tests has been performed with a pyrolysis oil made from pine. The pine oil is expected to be the type of biooil that will be commercially available in the near future. As a reference oil a standard heavy fuel oil is used, and an EFB oil, i.e. a pyrolysis oil made from empty fruit bunches with a higher ash content. The tests were executed in the 9 MWth steam boiler of Stork Thermeq and in the ECN Labscale Combustion Simulator LCS. The results show that pine oil can be fired on a commercial scale and that ash deposits and dust emissions with pine oil will be limited. In this respect EFB oil and heavy fuel oil are more problematic than pine oil.
