Abstract:

The contribution of solid biofuels in heat generation, in Greece, remains low. So, solid biofuels are used only in domestic and industrial sector. The main objective of this work is to identify the main barriers of biomass based fuels’ market and to propose for overcoming and help demand and supply meet each other. A financial motivation and support for consumers of biofuels looks promising. The promotion of biofuels should be supported by companies activated in the bioenergy market. The promotion should focus not only on biofuels as energy resource, but in combination with social and environmental issues like GHG emissions, sustainability of resources etc. The replacement of old heating systems and the use of refined wood fuels are very important for the development of bioenergy production. The modification of the legal framework prohibiting the use of solid biofuels for domestic use in specific regions in combination with a new determination of limits for emissions of gases and particles for all types of fuels could improve the use of biofuels. The development of a production and supply chain for solid and refined biofuels and its support by professionals (producers, merchants, retailers, equipment suppliers etc.) could create a well being market which would provide solutions to any consumer interested in bioenergy. Refined solid biofuels is a new product in bioenergy market in Greece. Prospects for the development of the market look promising but the support with specific actions is recommended. The use of forest and agricultural firewood fuels still plays an important role in the bioenergy market competes with fossil fuels in rural areas. The determination of specifications and the replacement of traditional heating systems with new and high efficiency systems would create the framework for more feasible use woody biomass as fuel. Prices of biofuels are influenced by the prices of oil and gas. The implementation of specific actions, supporting the biofuels market, under specific market rules, in combination with determination of specifications and environmental standards, is recommended for its penetration in the energy market.
