Abstract:

Biomass gasification is an option to exploit residual biomass and promote the decentralized generation of combined heat and power at small scale, and hydrogen or chemicals production at large scale. However, this technology has been facing many challenges, one of them is tar. This work deals with the sampling and characterization of biomass tar, the aim is to provide a critical approach to these stages and provide examples of the use of the experimental data in modeling activities. A tar sampling system has been developed to perform repeatable sampling conditions and to operate a standardized separation of the condensable fractions according to their boiling point. The sampling system has been tested with a fixed bed pyrolysis reactor used as tar generator, some issues related to the sampling conditions and their optimization are included. The collected tar has been analyzed with different techniques (TGA, TG-FTIR, CHN, GC-MS) and the results and capabilities of each techniques are reported. The information provided by each technique is compared with the needs of the devolatilization and gasification models used in our group.
