Abstract:

The variability of the amount of pruning material and of the content of non-structural carbohydrate (NSC) in the pruning material, was evaluated in 42 grape cultivars. Furthermore, in the two cultivars showing the highest and lowest content of starch, the content of glucose and xylose after acid hydrolysis was also measured. Statistically significant differences were recorded for all studied parameters. The average production of pruning material was around 3 t ha-1. Starch was the most abundant NSC. Glucose produced by hydrolysis, was positively affected by the content of NSC and the content of glucose correlated with the content of starch. The ratio glucose/xylose was similar in the two cultivars measured. Our results clearly show that i) the recovery of grape pruning material can provide a relevant amount of biomass for conversion to II generation bioetanolo ii) the amount of NSC, and notably that of starch, present in the pruning material can positively affect the amount of fermentable sugars in the biomass iii) the content of NSC can be a genetically determined character to be used in breeding programs for increasing the production of II generation bio-ethanol from lignocellulosic material.
