Abstract:
Short rotation coppice (SRC) is one of the most promising sources of woody biomass for energy in the frame of the European renewable energy strategy. While the study of improved clones and growing techniques is extremely important for future developments, the availability of reliable and cost effective harvesting systems is crucial for the very existence and sustainability of any SRC program. In fact, harvest and logistics of biomass can constitute up to 70% of the overall production costs of SRC biomass production. At present, commercial harvest operations in Italy are accomplished with modified foragers equipped with dedicated SRC headers. The present study provides an overview of the main characteristics and performance of four different models of forager/SCR header deployed in Italy.
