Abstract:

Poplar short rotation coppice (SRC) is a commercial reality in Italy since the beginning of the century. Typical Italian SRC plantation has a density of about 5-6.000 plants per hectare in single rows and is harvested every other year. The experience gained in the last 10 years by bioenergy entrepreneurs lead to a new concept of plantations, known as medium rotation coppice (MRC) where the rotation is increased to 5-6 years and density is reduced to about 1.400 plants per hectare. While SRC is commonly harvested using modified foragers the size of MRC trees requires different techniques because diameter at breast height (DBH) exceeds 20 cm even with not biomass-specific clones. This study presents the results of 4 different experimental harvesting operations on MRC.
