Abstract:

A protocol of pyrolysis tests has been conducted on wood pellets samples in order to get information about its thermal degradation kinetic in a fluidized bed reactor. The concentration of the products is observed over the time, employing an innovative online measuring system, based on UV light absorption. The strong points of this method are: the gas analysis without any manipulation of the samples, the cost lowering due to the used light sources and the consequent possibility of data recovering from real plants. A one component approach has been assumed as process kinetic behavior. The study reveals activation energy factors for tar formation in a range of 66-69kJmol-1 , depending on the selected wavelength. The analysis gives also some information about the drying phase. This phase, at conventional pyrolysis temperature (i.e. 300-500°C), lasts from 15s to 25s. The whole process thus holds from 850s up to 6000s, depending on the temperature. The kinetic determination is consequently based on some of the organic tar components that present a high extinction coefficient at the selected wavelength. However, considering the summary of the components, the method gives overall kinetic values with a good approximation.
