Abstract:

The main power plants and co-generation plants existing in Portugal using biomass as fuel and the national strategy for electricity production from biomass are discussed. The biomass fuel used and the ashes produced in two co-generation plants (grate and fluidized bed) were characterized. The bottom ashes from the grate are coarser in size than those from the fluidized bed. The amount of unburned material was lower than 4%wt for fly ashes, but around 10%wt for the bottom ashes from the grate. The main component of bottom ashes from the fluidized bed was Si, whereas the bottom ashes from the grate were mainly composed of Si and Ca. The main components of both fly ashes were Si and Ca. All the ashes are alkaline, generating leaching solutions with pH values higher than 10. The conductivity of the leaching solutions was in the range of 5 and 16 mS/cm. K, Na and Ca were the major leached elements. The leaching characteristics of the ashes were compared with the Portuguese legislation about waste acceptance in landfill, and according to the physical-chemical parameters analyzed the ashes can be accepted in landfill for non-dangerous material, but not in landfill for inert material.
