Biogas Yield from Untraditional Energy Crops in Latvia

Abstract:

Suitability of usage of 2 amaranth cultivars and greater burdock (Arctium lappa L) for biogas production in Latvia was investigated. Cultivars ‘Raudonukai’ (Amaranthus cruentus L.) and ‘Geltonukai' (Amaranthus hybridus L) of family Amaranthaceae were grown in small plots for investigation purposes. Amarant silage and greater burdock green biomass samples were mixed with inoculums and investigated for biogas production in 5 l digesters, operated in batch mode at temperature 38±1.0°C. Investigated biogas yield per unit of volatilized ­1­1 ­1 organic solids (VOS) was 515 l·kgVOS , 511 l·kgVOS or 509 l·kgVOS from amaranth cultivars ‘Raudonukai’ (purple amaranth), ‘Geltonukai’ (yellow amaranth) or from greater burdock respectively. Average methane content in biogas was 58.4%, 57.7% or 58.0% from purple amaranth, yellow amaranth or greater burdock respectively. Energy ­1 ­1 potential obtainable from 1 ha crop area is 73 GJ ha­1, 77 GJ ha or 115 GJ ha for purple amaranth, yellow amaranth or greater burdock respectively. Greenhouse gases (GHG) savings were 2.926 t CO2eq ha­1, 3.086 t CO2eq ha­1 or 4.589 t CO2eq ha­1 from energy produced by purple amaranth, yellow amaranth or greater burdock respectively.
