Abstract:
The project to assess the potential for algal biofuels production in the Brazilian semi-arid region has three steps (1) characterization and growth response to temperature and different salinity of brackish water of different microalgae species for biodiesel production, (2) evaluation of local conditions in terms of anthropogenic CO2 emissions, sunlight and temperature range, saline or brackish water availability, and (3) based on these results, choose the most appropriate technology for microalgae culture considering the social and economical development of the region. The available resources (i.e. land, industrial CO2, saline and brackish ground water, wastewater as nutrient source) were evaluated in order to estimate the potential of biomass production in the semi-arid region. A preliminary test with Nannochloropsis sp. cultivated in Conway medium with sea water or brackish water was carried out to evaluate the feasibility of biomass production using an alternative medium.
