Abstract:

While combustion of biomass is a climatefriendly means to keep a house warm, emissions have to be considered. With the improvements shown by e.g. Diesel particle filters, particulate matter emissions (PME) of small scale solid biofuel furnaces has come into the focus of public attention. Particle precipitators are an obvious remedy. In order to foster the installation of these devices, standards have to be agreed on regarding their evaluation. The legal background, a proposal for a test bed design, uncertainty budgets and a preliminary evaluation of particle counting vs. gravimetric determination are presented as part of the road to establishing standard precipitator evaluation procedures. The operational map of a commercial electrostatic precipitator including different fuels and different volume flow rates is shown alongside a possible explanation of its behavior.
