Abstract:
The energetic use of wood has increased strongly within the last years. In that context the increased and still growing demand caused local supply shortages and hence to some extent seriously price fluctuations. The target of the international standardisation activities for solid biofuels is to compensate these supply shortages. Based on the standardisation requirements the trade of high quality solid biofuels is facilitated and thus contributes to a sustainable and secure energy supply. The preparation of international standards for solid biofuels is carried out by the European Standardisation Committee CEN TC 335 ‘solid biofuels’, which is currently developing a set of standards in which fuel specifications and classes, sampling, chemical and physical test methods as well as measures for quality assurance for the supply of solid biofuels are defined. Based on these new European standards, the German Biomass Research Centre (DBFZ) developed in collaboration with the German and the Austrian Pellet Association a new certification scheme for high quality wood pellet, called ENplus. ENplus has been successfully implemented in the German market in 2010, in Austria in 2011; currently the market implementation in Spain, Italy and other EUcountries is prepared. Moreover, already existing certification schemes, have been modified according to the new European product requirements.
