Abstract:

The project BIOSIRE, financed by the Intelligent Energy Europe program, aimed at implementing new ways to promote sustainable mobility in European tourist resorts. Veneto Region, as a partner of the project, had the task of realizing a detailed feasibility study evaluating the chances to create local supply chains producing two kind of biofuels such as biodiesel produced from Used Cooking Oil (UCO) collected in the area of Venice, and Pure Vegetable Oil (PVO) produced from rapeseed cultivated in the nearby area of the city. The idea was then to make these biofuels available for the local water mobility system of Venice Lagoon. Starting from the analysis of the potentialities of the territory and taking into account the precious advices of all local stakeholders, it was possible to demonstrate how biomasses can play a leading role in shipping the existent water mobility system towards a more sustainable one.
