Abstract:

This work attempted to imitate a base oxide of dolomite, MgO, on the surface of alumina supported Nicatalyst. In addition, CeO2 was considered to suppress the coking on Nicatalyst. Experiments were carried out in a droptube fixed bed reactor. Empty fruit brunch (EFB), waste from palm oil manufacturing, was employed as biomass feedstock. Catalysts were prepared by a wet impregnation method. The effect of each oxide was investigated on the performance of catalyst in terms of activity and catalyst lifetime. Furthermore, influence of calcination temperature during catalyst preparation was examined. The results with different catalysts were compared and discussed. Characterization of prepared catalysts was also performed using XRD technique in order to provide additional information for discussion. The results indicated that modification of NiO/Al2O3 with MgO and CeO2 obviously enhanced tar elimination and increased gas production. Calcination temperature during catalyst preparation was found to significantly affect on catalyst activity. The lower calcined temperature was likely desirable for the CeO2modified catalyst rather than the MgOmodified catalyst in terms of hydrogen production. In addition, the characterization results revealed that the modified catalysts exhibited higher Ni dispersion and lower sintering than unmodified catalyst.
