Abstract:
A bioenergy chain, from short rotation coppice (SRC) to a micro district heating network, has been established in a farm. The biomass, from experimental short rotation coppice trials of poplar, willow, black locust and elm, feed an automated boiler system (200 kW). The economic assessment of the entire micro district heating network considers the production costs of wood chips and management of the boiler, the economic balance of the various production processes of the woodenergy chain and a comparison with the system of diesel oil heating oil already present. The financial analysis shows the average cost per unit of wood chips of the four species and the unit cost of the energy produced. In order to meet the annual requirement of thermal energy demand (200 MWt), about 100 tons of wood chips are required, equivalent to about 18 tonnes of diesel. The economic analysis emphasizes the sustainability of a chipfed system for the production of thermal energy.
