Abstract:

Small and middle scale biomass utilisation has recently been emphasised in Japan to deal with limited amount of feasible biomass collection, variety of biomass feedstock and variety of ways of energy use. The aim of the present study is to demonstrate that spent mushroom bed discharged from an artificial mushroom factory may be effectively applied as renewable feedstock for steam production. The system capable of converting 1.5t per a day of feedstock to steam consists of a drier, a pelletiser, a fixed bed gasifier, a steam generator with a producer gas furnace and a once-through boiler. The low heating value of the producer gas was 4.5 – 4.7 MJ/m3 N-dry. Stable operations of the gasifier were achieved by the proper control of the char discharge according to the producer gas yield. Since relatively high ash content of spent mushroom bed can lead to slagging under high temperatures in the gasifier, the char discharge were adjusted in such a manner that the gasifier wall temperature did not exceed 1100K. The concentrations of CO and NOx were far below the regulated values in Japan. The thermal efficiencies of the gasifier and the steam generator were 86% and 78%, respectively. The total thermal efficiency was 32%.
