Abstract:
The increasing use of biomass as energy source for renewable energy poses questions regarding the sustainability of the socalled biofuels. Nutrients present in biofuels are in many countries currently scarcely recycled as new nutrients for biomass. Common practice is to reuse them in construction materials or dispose them on landfills. This causes the dissipation of nutrients that are necessary for biomass production for both biofuels and food. This paper identifies the missing link for sustainable nutrient management that would enable closing the cycle when biofuels are used. This missing link is a bioash refinery that enables economy of scale and standard quality for supply to agriculture or the fertilizer industry.
