In this paper are reported production performances of two species: Robinia pseudoacacia L. and Paulownia tomentosa Steud after five years of growth. In 2006 a trial was established in sandy­loam soil of CRA­PLF experimental farm at Casale Monferrato There are compared the two species with two different densities (high, 1666 trees/h, and very high density, 8333 trees/ha). A Split­plot design with three replications was utilized. Trees of high density model were harvested at the end of fifth year, trees of very high density model were harvested at the end of third year and fifth year. Rooting was generally good (93%) but after first harvest and during second cycle, stumps at the closer spacing show a certain mortality and survival at the end of the fifth year slightly decrease (89%). Total above ground dry biomass, after five year, is significantly higher in very high density model, both for the two species. The biomass production of trees grown at the closer spacing is twice that of trees grown at wider spacing. The differences among the two species are not statistically significant. Both are able to grow in environmental situations not suitable for poplar and willow clones and require fewer tending operation.
