Abstract:

Purpose of this paper is to present the result of a SRC experimental plantation established in 2002, in the experimental farm of Research Unity for Intensive Wood Production (CRA-PLF) at Casale Monferrato, Italy. The trial cover about 1 ha on sandy soil. Two planting layout: single and twin rows with the same density (10000 trees per ha) and 14 poplar and 6 willow clones are been compared. From 2002 the trial was harvested four times: the first two cycle are biennial, the third triennial and the last biennial. Rooting was very high for both species. Willow survival after repeated coppicing was generally better than poplars (66,1% compared with 49% of poplars) The productions were high, both for poplars and willows. Some poplar clones maintain high productions in spite of elevate stumps mortality thanks to high growth of the shoots of surviving stumps; willow clones maintain high productions (general mean of 14,80 Odt•ha-1•y-1 in fourth biennial cycle) thanks to elevate number of shoots per stump. No differences were found for the two planting layouts, and currently, in Italy the twin rows layout is abandoned. Willows reached very good yield, better than poplar in this environment of Northern Italy.
