Abstract:
The concept of fast pyrolysis of biomass for the production of bio oil integrated into a fluidized bed power boiler has been studied. The purpose has been to assess the performance of the integrated plant and to investigate the cost penalties to the CHP plant with an integrated fast pyrolysis process compared to a standalone CHP plant. A model simulation of the integrated fast pyrolysis process has been built using the Aspen Plus simulation software. The model simulation is based on tests done in an integrated fast pyrolysis process development unit (PDU). The model has been able to confirm earlier assessments claiming that the integration can bring about several technical and economic advantages, such as a higher overall efficiency compared to standalone fast pyrolysis concepts, increased operating flexibility and minimized overall efficiency penalty of the total power plant. In addition, the integrated concept has lower investment costs and lower operating costs than a standalone concept, and it has been shown that even lowvalue biomass such as forest residue can have a positive impact on the plant performance in an integrated fast pyrolysis concept.
