Abstract:
Ensiling of biomass is s a potential storage method for bioenergy feedstock. At the e same time the silage process might function as a simple p pretreatment method given its moist acidic conditions, and h hereby facilitate better enzymatic hydrolysis of the lignoc cellulosic structure. Ensiling is an anaerobic biological p rocess that conserves biomass. The lactic acid bacteria co onsume free soluble sugars in the biomass and produce lac ctic acid as their main metabolite, which causes a drop in ppH preventing further biological degradation. The aim of thhis study is to use the ensiling method as pretreatment fo or production of bioethanol from green energy grasses. Th he green energy grass Hykor, a Festulolium type, a hybrid cross between Festuca and Lolium species can grow with h high yields in northern temperate regions having high res sistance against cold conditions. The yields are around 1 1517 ton dry matter (DM)/hectare. Hykor are therefore in nteresting as substrate for bioethanol and are consequently u used in this study.
