Co-Processing of Rapeseed Oil and Gas Oil Mixture to Produce Diesel Fuel

Abstract:

One of the possible solutions to replace the unfavourable properties of biodiesel (FAME) is the catalytic co­hydrogenation of the vegetable oils (triglycerides) in a mixture with gas oils in one catalytic step for the production of second generation biofuels. For the examination of this we used in the experiments straight run gas oil with 0, 10, 20, 30, 50% rapeseed oil content. A NiMo/Al2O3 catalyst with expedient composition was used. We investigated the impact of the process parameters (T=300­380°C, P=60­80 bar, LHSV=1.0 h­1, H2/feed=600 Nm3/m3) and the vegetable oil content of the feedstocks on the yield, the physical, chemical and application properties of the main product. We obtained that both the conversion of vegetable oil and the gas oil quality improvement reactions took place. Under the usage of the favourable process parameters (T=380°C, P=80 bar, LHSV=1.0 h­1 , H2/feed=600 Nm3/m3 and 0­20% vegetable oil content) the main properties (sulphur content: 1­8 mg/kg, polyaromatic content: 1.1­2.2%, CFPP: ­2 to +2°C) of the bio­component containing diesel fuel products satisfy the requirements of standard EN 590:2009+A1:2010 (temperate zones, summer quality). The mixing of vegetable oil reduces the efficiency of desulphurization compared to the pure gas oil feedstock, because the oxygen removal reactions took place on the same active sites of catalyst as the desulphurisation reactions. We concluded that a gas oil hydrogenation plant with a slight modification may be suitable for the co­processing of vegetable oil and gas oil.
