Abstract:

This work investigates the effect of a multifunctional additive package in the pure rape seed oil (RSO) on exhaust particulate emissions in terms of, number concentration and size distribution using a DI diesel engine. The combustion and emission performance was evaluated. A detergent based multifunctional additive package was added to the RSO. A comparison test was conducted to investigate the influence of the additive package on particulate number and size distributions using a SMPS. The engine used was a 6 cylinder, turbocharged, intercooled Perkins Phaser Engine, fitted with an oxidation catalyst and meeting the Euro II emissions limits. The tests were conducted under steady state conditions of 23kW and 47kW power output at an engine speed of 1500 rpm. The incylinder pressure, gaseous and particulate exhaust emissions were measured. The Particle size distribution was determined from the exhaust sample using a Dekati microdilution system and SMPS Analyser. The results show that the additive package could effectively reduce the particulate number concentrations and change the distribution characteristics of particulates.
