Abstract:
The objective of this study was to assess the biogas yields produced by using sugar beet as codigestion feedstock in the Italian context. Sugar beet may be considered as an energy crop since it has great potential for the production of biogas due to the high content of digestible matter (sugars and fibres). The use of different biomass sources in anaerobic digesters (for example, as a replacement for corn silage) is becoming necessary in order to allow appropriate crop rotations and to improve “sustainability” and land use efficiency. Furthermore, the high yield biomass capacity of sugar beet may highly benefit cultivation areas where there water is less available and/or where the production corn is less competitive. During the trials a maximum of 30.7 t ha1 of dry matter was obtained from sugar beet roots and leaves, with a methane yield up to 12000 Nm3 ha1 .
