Abstract:
The EU BIOLYFE project focuses on demonstrating the hydrolysis and fermentation steps at industrial scale of the lignocellulosic bioethanol process: nevertheless, the overall industrial project will demonstrate the entire chain, thus including the upstream and downstream process, namely innovative pretreatment steps and product separation/utilization. The main aim of BIOLYFE is to design and build a demo industrialscale second generation bioethanol production plant with an output of approx. 40,000 tons ethanol per year. The plant, currently under construction in Crescentino (VC, Italy), will be fed with Giant Reed (Arundo donax) and Wheat Straw. It is the first 2nd generation bioethanol plant with a short supply chain: in fact, 4500 ha of marginal land is available in this the area for cultivation. The process (Chemtex PROESA technology) is based on a prehydrolysis pretreatment step able to work at high solid concentration (until 40%): then, simultaneous saccharification (= hydrolysis) and fermentation (SSF) are performed in a SSF reactor, bringing an optimization of ethanol yield and reduction of overall complexity of the process and capital costs. This is the novelty of the proprietary process. The fuel will be tested in a dedicated test fleet of at least 5 vehicles. This plant will avoid the production of 50.000 ton of CO2 each year, which is the CO2 production of 7000 vehicles.
