Abstract:

Since the apparition of the Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy in 2000, the animal residues from farms and slaughterhouses have become an important waste in Europe. Thermochemical treatment of meat and bone meal (MBM) with air in a fluidized bed reactor has been studied in this work as a potential and effective alternative for the management of this material. The aim of this work is to study the influence of important operating conditions (temperature and equivalence ratio (ER)) on the final product distribution (char, gas and tar yield) and the gas lower heating value obtained in the gasification process. The experiments have been performed at high bed temperature (between 800 ºC and 900 ºC) and at a fluidization velocity between 6 and 9 times the minimum fluidization velocity, resulting in an ER between 0.09 and 0.21, respectively. The results show that the carbonaceous solid, the liquid and the gas yield ranges varied from 12.1 wt. % to 17.7 wt., from 16.7 wt. % to 40.3 wt. % and from 42.0 wt. % to 68.5 wt. %, respectively. The gas lower heating value was between 1.7 and 3.7 MJ/STP m3.
