Abstract:
The production of bioenergy has many positive effects that include, among others, added regional value and creation of jobs in rural areas. In the context of the nationwide competition Bioenergy Regions the Federal Ministry for Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection supports 25 regions across Germany for a period of three years in their efforts to establish efficient regional bioenergy networks. The German Biomass Research Centre monitors and analyses the technoeconomic aspects of the regional project implementations. Aims of our research are the investigation of the development of biomass production and use during the competition period and the consequences of bioenergy development on the regional economy. First results revealed that current bioenergy production is very different from region to region but in nearly all regions the network initiatives have soon resulted in better knowledge about regional bioenergy stakeholders and first pilot projects.
