Abstract:

The production of biomass for food supply and energetic or raw material uses is of growing importance in view of global dynamics such as biodiversity loss, water scarceness and migration under the most diverse points of view. The increasing demand for renewable raw materials can only be met in a sustainable way by implementing a cascade use of the raw materials and by using previously untapped raw material sources. Agriculture has evolved into a key producer of biomass for energy production. This is not the most efficient method of utilising biomass. In integrated biorefineries a wide range of products, such as food, chemicals, materials and energy products can be generated from biomass. Agriculturists can cultivate industry plants or use residues of the food and feeding stuff production to produce pre-products for these biorefineries. The residual materials, left over after refining on the farm, can be used as animal feed or a source of energy and subsequently as fertilizer. The peripheral implementation of integrated biorefineries and the production of pre-products for these biorefineries on farms can help to protect the diversity in landscape and offers the chance for a sustainable development in rural areas.
