Abstract:

This work is aimed at investigating possible causes of tar overproduction in a gasification system coupled to two ICengines producing 250 kW of electric power. The gasifier, a stratified downdraft reactor, is fed with woodchips. In order to reduce the tar production, a measuring campaign and a simple mathematical model of the system have been set up. Experimental data have been acquired by different methods, such as pressure drop analysis for air flow rate measurement calibration, Pitot flow meter for the syngas flow rate, moisture scale for the biomass moisture and mass flow analysis for biomass consumption. The model has been used to simulate the behavior of a theoretical system working under same conditions of the real one. Other parameters, such as wood chips size or temperature stratification in the reactor, are not used in this model, anyway they have been analyzed for a better comprehension of the problem. Therefore, the comparison between the model and the data, can be used to predict, for different operating conditions, how far the real plant is working from its theoretical production values. Potential solutions are suggested.
