Abstract:
This work analyzes the main aspects to be considered for the improvement of operation in sugarcane facilities in Cuba, when taking into account, in addition to sugar, the combined production of ethanol and other chemicals, both from traditional sources (like molasses and sugar cane juices) but also from sugarcane waste streams, like sugarcane bagasse. The possibilities of introducing a new technology for producing ethanol and coproducts in existing sugar production facilities is analyzed together with the economic, environmental and technical impacts in a complex industry producing ethanol, furfural and fiber boards. The possibilities of insert a new technology of production of ethanol and coproducts are analyzed starting from bagasse of sugar cane, as well as, economic and environmental technical impact of incorporation of referred technology in a complex industry producer of ethanol from molasses, furfural and fiber boards. One of the main analyzed alternatives consists in using the juice of the industrial process of sugar production to guarantee a greater bagasse source (instead of producing more sugar), which in turn can be converted into ethanol and other products. As a result, the technoeconomic analysis showed that it is possible to adapt the available, existing equipment for restructuring the studied plants and take full advantage of the raw material.
