Abstract:
Bagasse is a by-product of cane sugar production, used for heat cogeneration, and for furfural, boards and ethanol production from lignocellullosic residuals. The furfural hydrolysis stage coincides with the acidic pre treatment stage of ethanol technology. Starting from the best results obtained by several authors and changing different operation conditions of furfural hydrolysis step, with smaller reaction time, the objective of this study is to evaluate techno-economic impact of revamping in the acid hydrolysis stage of bagasse in furfural distillation. The simulation software Aspen Plus 11.1 was used to analyze the influence of changes in the process variables of the furfural distillation stage. A sensitivity analysis of variables was performed and mass and energy balances were determined. It was obtained that there are possibilities of reanimations of furfural plants using the existing distillation towers by adapting them to new conditions of raw material and technologies.
