Abstract:

Within the subject biomass resources, the paper focuses on biomass residues and by-products of the forest and wood industry sector. Out of the three groups of residues: direct, indirect and recovered wood products the following analysis examines the less well recognized recovered or recoverable wood products. The production and consumption of Harvested Wood Products HWP: Wood based Panels, Sawnwood and Paper and Paperboard have led to a considerable carbon stock in 2005 and will lead to an even further increasing carbon stock in 2030 (production/consumption scenarios FAO year 2030 in “State of the World’s Forests, 2009). Following IPCC Tier-1 guidelines the results are presented for the Stock Change Approach applying the piecewise analytical integration of exponential growth. From the HWP stocks the feedstocks of residues are calculated with the knowledge of the halflives of the wood commodities. On a world wide basis 420/644 Mm³/a recovered wood products have been assessed for the years 2005/2030 corresponding to 4.20/6.44 EJ/an as compared to a world primary energy consumption of 500 EJ. Deposition in solid waste disposal sites, phased out in the EU, is worldwide no alternative, because of the possible formation of the powerful GHG methane and the loss of valuable renewable energy.
