Potential Energy Supply Systems Based on Residual Biomass at Organic Farms

Abstract:

The paper investigates the potential of modern bioenergy systems to make organic arable or dairy farms self-sufficient in energy, only by utilizing their own residual biomass. The purpose of the study is to assess the possibility to replace current fossil-based fuel systems in the agricultural sector with reneweable energy sources. This could help achieving European climate goals and contribute to higher credibitliy of organic farms as an environmental alternative to conventional farming, in particular if waste streams are used. Use of waste streams would not interfer with food production or cause indirect land use changes (for example deforestation). Technical systems that utilize waste streams from a defined arable and dairy farm respectively, are here described, dimensioned and analyzed to investigate if existing sources are sufficient to meet demand given realistic assumptions on yields and conversion efficiencies throughout the supply chain. The entire energy demand is included (heat, electricity and tractor/vehicle fuel). Resources utilized are ley used as green manure and straw at the arable farm, and stable manure mixed with straw and rapeseed oil at the dairy farm. The results show that it is possible to supply the respective farms with energy via the investigated systems, and hence that organic farms given the right prerequisities and conditions could become independent of fossil fuels.
