Abstract:
The aim of this study was to introduce a method for analyzing the availability and demand of forest fuel in local and regional level. It is estimated that forest biomass could be the main source of bioenergy in Finland when meeting the national target: 38 % renewable from total energy consumption by 2020. In regional and local level it is usually possible to increase the use of forest biomass e.g. in district heating and in large CHP-power plants. However there are usually doubts about the availability and security of supply about forest biomass. This study tries to give objective information about the local possibilities on where and how much the use of forest biomass could be increased. By replacing the use of fossil fuels with renewable and domestic energy sources the CO2-emissions and dependency on imported fossil fuels can be reduced.
