Abstract:
In last years the production of biofuels has generated a high interest because of governments’ actions to reduce fossil fuels consumption in transport and other uses. The aim of this work is the economic analysis of the coproduction of synthetic natural gas (SNG) and bioethanol in a biorefinery context. Conceptual process design and technoeconomic assessment of a plant size of 2140 dry tonne/day of wood chip (500 MWth) is presented. The proposed Bio SNGEthanol process involves biomass gasification (atmospheric indirectly heated CFB gasifier), gas cleaning and conditioning, ethanol synthesis (Rhbased catalyst), ethanol separation and dehydration, methanation (Haldor Topsoe TREMP®) and SNG conditioning. The Bio SNGEthanol process is rigorously modeled in a commercial chemical process simulator and the results from the simulations are used to estimate cost of production of synthetic natural gas and bioethanol. The results reveal that a minimum SNG selling price of 37.9 €2010/MWhSNG for a 10% rate of return when an ethanol market price of 0.48 €2010/L and a biomass price of 51 €2010/dry tonne are considered.
