Abstract:
This paper explores the linkage between biomass and regional development, based on the ‘Regions of Knowledge’ initiative (FP7), aiming to boost regional development through the implementation of a joint action plan between research intensive regional clusters. Three Regions of Knowledge projects have came together to present this paper (BIOMOB, BIOCLUS and RESGEN) integrating their findings so far with the theme of biomass and regional development. The importance of these projects is that they are examples of the linkages between regional policy and biomass. From the projects, three issues are emerging as being of special importance to the linkage of biomass with the regions: strategic research and innovation agendas, decentralized sustainable energy solutions and regional innovation. We recommend that future development in the linkage of biomass with regional development concentrate on these three issues.
