Abstract:

A biomass combustion pilot plant for small scale power generation was designed, developed and constructed in Spain. This is the first of these characteristics working in Spain: a full-scale demonstration plant that generates heat (800 kWt) and electricity (125 kWe) by means of an Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC). To achieve this aim, the state-of-the-art of the Organic Rankine Cycle was studied. Also, the combustion process for different biomasses was experimentally characterized in order to select the best technology for generating the heat required by the ORC. Based on the previous research, an ORC module was selected for a small electricity generation of 125 kWe and adapted to the heat coming from a thermal oil boiler warmed up by a fixed grate biomass furnace. With all the previous results, the detailed engineering of all the systems of the pilot plant was carried out. Finally, the plant was constructed and commissioned, demonstrating the small scale power generation in a combustion biomass plant by means of an ORC module.
