Abstract:

A new staged gasification system for biomass and waste is presented. The process consists in three stages: a fluidized bed (FB) devolatilizer, a non-catalytic tar reformer and a fixed bed of char particles. A model has been developed in Aspen Plus to simulate the system. The model uses kinetics of gas phase reactions from literature and product yields from devolatilization and char gasification reactivities obtained experimentally in a laboratory FB. The model predicts the temperatures and gas and char composition, as well as the solid and gas flows in the different parts of the system. A number of simulations have been conducted using dried sewage sludge (DSS), a fuel containing high amount of ash. The results were used to: (i) compare the performance of three-stage gasifier to a stand-alone bubbling fluidized bed gasifier, showing the great improvement of the performance achieved in the new sytem, and to (ii) to have input for preliminary design of a pilot plant that is currently under construction.
