Abstract:

A technical solution, which combines a Stirling-engine with a biomass boiler through a heat exchanger, shall be presented at the end of the project. To comply to this a heat transfer concept is developed to detail the technical requirements for the heat exchanger. The heat exchanger is built and then tested for verification of the design parameters by measuring and assessment of the connecting situation. Electricity then can be produced with a decentralized system in a combined mode (cogeneration of power and heat, CHP) in a small capacity (approximately less than 100 kW to 10 kW electrical capacity) relying on biomass fuels only. Since the previous concepts of the biomass utilization for power either show technical problems or only lead to low levels of electrical effiencies in connection with Stirling-engines, a trend-setting new solution shall be worked out with the planned approach of an indirect heat transfer concept on a high temperature level. The setting of the process on a high temperature level safeguards a higher electrical efficiency, causes, however, a higher effort for the heat transfer from the biomass fuel to the heater head of the heat exchanger at the Stirling-engine. The indirect coupling through a heat exchanger widens the fuel choice since not only wood chips but also less "standardized" bio fuels can be used, also in the small capacity range.
