Abstract:
This paper investigate the effect of copper, chromium and boron on the pyrolysis of wood and their distribution in the pyrolysis products. For this, we have impregnated a mixture of softwood with several inorganic compounds (CuSO4, KCr(SO4)2, B4Na2O7) and with chromate copper boron salt (CCB). Impregnation was conducted by dipping for inorganic compounds and by pressure for salts of CCB. Results from thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) show an increase in the final char and decrease in degradation temperature of treatedwood compared to untreated wood. In addition, slow pyrolysis experiments were carried out in lab reactor in order to perform mass balance calculation for the total system and to examine important process parameters (pyrolysis temperature and residence time) on the release of metals. The pyrolysis products were quantified using analytical balance whereas gases were analyzed by micro gas chromatography (GC/TCD). The observations are confirmed by TGA. Furthermore we have observed that CCB treatedwood increases the formation of H2. The concentration analysis of copper, chromium and boron in final char is carried by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICPMS). The results suggest that pyrolysis at low temperature and short residence time produce final char which contains more than 80% of initial amount of metal CCBtreated wood. We conducted analysis of the lower heating value of pyrolysis products and the results obtained are promising.
