Abstract:

Recently, many countries have turned their attention to the production and consumption of biofuels. This interest is due to factors like the need for mitigation of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, the volatility of oil prices, search for a more diverse energy matrix and the development of the agricultural sector. However, doubts have been raised regarding to the real benefits of biofuels and, in this sense, the effective sustainability of biofuels is an essential aspect for their consolidation in the local and international markets. The Brazilian Bioethanol Science and Technology Laboratory (CTBE) has its focus on innovative and sustainable production of ethanol from sugarcane and one of its five research programs aims at sustainability issues. The research program on Sustainability of Bioethanol from Sugarcane is organized in five research projects that have been conducted simultaneously. The activities of this research program are described in this paper.
