Estimation of Biogas Production Potential from Municipal Solid Waste in the Region of Biobio, Chile

Abstract:

The Biobio Region in Chile is characterized by a population of ca. 1,861,500 inhabitants, and the tradition of being the most industrialized region of the country. It is also characterized by its developed sanitary landfill network, which nowadays concentrates the disposal destination of 88% of the waste generated in the region. Nonetheless, there are still six dumping places operating in the region, and there are over 15 old disposal sites where closure programs are being carried out. Currently the Region of Biobio yearly generates approximately 511,000 t of MSW, thus making it interesting to utilize it for energetic purposes via biogas production. This work evaluated the potential for biogas production technically feasible to recover from the municipal solid waste management system, considering substitution of natural gas as its final use. For estimating biogas generation and composition, U.S. EPA’s LandGEM model and selected IPCC parameter have been utilized. Results indicate that the four sanitary landfills concentrate 92% of the generated biogas during the evaluated timeframe, and that their distance to the potential injection points along the natural gas pipeline is relatively small. It is concluded that only sanitary landfills should be incorporated in a future potential biogas recovery system. Moreover, results indicate that by converting all biogas generated at the sanitary landfills to biomethane, it is possible to substitute an average of 8-10%.
