Study of the Reaction Front Thickness in a Biomass Fixed-Bed Combustor

Abstract:

The aim of this work is to analyze the behaviour of the reaction front thickness in a biomass combustor depending on the air mass flow rate. With this purpose, some modifications are introduced in a real fixed-bed combustor to continuously measure the depth of the bed’s surface. This new device coupled with the thermocouples used to measure the pass of the different fronts will allow us to record the thickness’ evolution of the drying, devolatilisation and char oxidation phases. These three phases will define the reaction front. Results of this work seem to point out that influence of air mass flow rate is more or less constant, and the thickness of drying and devolatilisation phases is quiet similar and non-variable until the extinction phase is achieved. Also, the behaviour of char oxidation phase fairly differs. Preliminary data suggest that this phase presents an optimum air flow rate, where thickness is minimum, reducing the bed thermal inertia. A deeper detailed work is needed to extend the understanding of the process taken place in a real-scale combustion plants.
